The level of measurement for this data is RATIO. It is because we can calculate the age of each person in a form of proportion. Moreover, the data is quantitative data which is discrete variables. The ratio of number is also meaningful. A 40 year old os twice as old as someone 20 years old.

(b) In a survey of 200 luxury car owners, 100 were from California, 50 from New York, 30 from illinois, and 20 from Ohio

The level of measurement for this data is NOMINAL because it can be arranged into categories regardless particular order. We are free to arrange the luxury cars with no natural order. Let’s say we can from put New York first instead of from Ohio.

1. What is the level of measurement for each of the following variables

a. Student IQ ratings- the level of measurement for this variable is INTERVAL due to IQ ratings can be easily ranked by a mark that the student get from an IQ test. Besides that, it is crucial to note that ZERO (0) is just a point on the scale. It does not represent the absence of the IQ of students.

b. Distance student travel to class- the level of measurement for this variable is RATIO because of it is regarding about quantitative data. Moreover, the variable examines about distance that student travel to class which is the zero point is the absence of the characteristics. That is mean if the student don’t go to school, then the distance student travel to school is ZERO (0).

c. The jersey numbers of a sorority soccer team- the level of measurement regarding this variable is NOMINAL because of the variable of interest is divided into categories. Apart from that, there is no natural order. That is, we could report any jersey number first.

e. A ranking of student as freshman, sophomore, junior and senior – the level of measurement for this variable is ORDINAL. It is because the variable has a relative values, the data classified can be ranked and order. Even though, we are not able to distinguish the magnitude of the differences between groups, we can only conclude that a ranking of the freshman student is better that the ranking of the sophomore.

f. Number of hours students study per week- the level of measurement for this variable is RATIO due to number of hours are able to calculate as a form of proportion. Moreover, it is the quantitative data and the 0 hour is meaningful. For instance, if the student doesn’t study at the whole week, so the number of hours students study per week is ZERO (0) no hours.
