'Scholarship is investment, not expenditure'

As Malaysia moved towards a high income developed nation, the key to the success was in its people.

MELBOURNE: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the government views scholarship as an investment, not an expenditure, saying its viability will eventually steer the country to greater heights.

"If we continue investing in people, we will make our nation more competitive," he said.

Addressing a group of Malaysians, mostly students who braved the chilling weather to meet him during his visit at Melbourne University here Friday, Najib pointed out that as Malaysia moved towards a high income developed nation, the key to the success was in its people.

"If you have the right kind of people, you can move mountain; lift the country to greater heights," he said.

He advised Malaysians to think about contributing to the country back home after gaining much experience and exposure on best practice abroad.

He said the scholarship system could turn one into a much better person and contribute positively to the society through his or her set of values and virtues. - BERNAMA
